Direct School Admission to Deyi Secondary - Performing Arts
In May 2005, MOE approved Deyi Secondary's application for development in the Performing Arts. From 2017, Deyi is able to offer 5% of the Secondary One student places on a discretionary basis to build our approved distinctive programmes (LLP and ALP).
In anticipation of the future demands of the New Economy, Deyi aims to build on its present achievements to propel the school to the next level where the Performing Arts is extended to the entire school population. Thus Performing Arts @ Deyi is not just about creative movement or opportunities for all students regardless of socio-economic background; more importantly, it is about values inculcation, holistic development of the child, expanding the common space amidst our rich and diverse cultural heritage and fostering social responsibility so that our students will become Active Learners, Gracious Citizens.
The Performing Arts is in alignment with our Strategic Thrust – ‘Character Education & Talent Development'. All selected students will be recruited into Performing Arts-related CCAs namely, Movement & Dance, School Band, Choir and English Drama Club for a customised Talent Development Programme.
The desired outcomes we envision for all Deyians are:
• To be more culturally aware and appreciative of the various forms of performing arts;
• To learn at least one 'performing art' skill (i.e. to be able to dance, act or sing reasonably well);
• To perform in at least one school / public performance.
Parents and students are encouraged to choose schools wisely based on the student’s aptitudes and strengths, bearing in mind the schools’ academic and non-academic requirements, and the programmes available to develop the area of talent.

Student must show diligence and positive attitude towards academic work.
2. Ability in relevant areas of Music, Dance & Drama
Qualifications in the relevant areas would be an advantage. For example:
o Music – e.g. ABRSM Theory & Practical Certification,
o Dance – e.g. Royal Academy of Dancing Certification,
o Drama – e.g. Trinity College of London International Exam Board Certification for Speech and Drama
3. Accomplishments in relevant areas of Music, Dance and Drama
Accomplishments in the relevant areas will be taken into consideration. For example:
o Awards or Certificates for intra-school, inter-schools or equivalent competitions and performances.
o Examples of performance, choreography work, script writing, etc for class, school, community outreach concerts,
o Participation and level of representation in School / Public performances (including school concert,
Community/Grassroots events, cultural exchanges, etc).
Student must pass the interview conducted by school.
Student must pass an audition in the relevant areas of music, dance and drama conducted by the school.
Candidates will first be short-listed based on Criteria 1–3.
All shortlisted candidates after Stage 1 will be informed by 14 July 2017 of their interview and audition date. Non-shortlisted candidates will also be informed that they are unsuccessful in their application.
Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by a panel made up of Vice–Principal, HOD/SH CCA, HOD/SH Aesthetics and/or Teacher in-charge of Performing Arts-Related CCAs.
Short-listed candidates will be required to undergo an audition.
After Stage 2 (Interview) and Stage 3 (Audition), the results will be compiled and all shortlisted candidates will be notified by 31 Aug 2017 if they have been given a Confirmed Offer, put on the Waiting List or if the school is unable to offer them a place.
Those given a Confirmed Offer are guaranteed a place in the school in a course [Express, Normal (Academic) or Normal (Technical)] which the student is eligible for. This is based on the PSLE aggregate of the student.

5. For applicants not studying in MOE schools.
Applicants who are currently not studying in MOE schools are required to obtain a registration number from MOE HQ Customer Service Centre, located in 1 North Buona Vista Drive, Podium Block MOE Building (Tel: 68722220) starting from 8 May 2017 before submitting the DSA Application Form. This includes Singaporeans (citizens and permanent residents) and International Students who are currently not studying in MOE schools.
Key Activities & Dates
a) Application Stage, 8 May – 7 July 2017
Application will be opened from 8 May 2017 to 7 Jul 2017. All application forms and relevant documents must be submitted to the school latest by 7 Jul 2017, 5pm.
b) Selection Stage, 11 July – 31 August 2017
By 14 Jul 2017 – All shortlisted applicants will be informed of their interview and audition date
By 31 Aug 2017 – All shortlisted candidates will be notified by post as to whether he/she is on the confirmed, waiting or rejected list.
Students given a Confirmed Offer are guaranteed a place in the school if they have indicated it during the exercise at School Preference Stage, and they qualify for the academic course offered by the school of choice [Express, Normal (Academic) or Normal (Technical)].
c) Exercise School Preference Stage, 30 Oct – 3 Nov 2017
On 30 October 2017, applicants who have been placed under the Confirmed List and the Waiting List will receive the School Preference Form from their primary schools. Applicants not studying in MOE schools will collect their School Preference Form from MOE Customer Service Centre. Applicants can indicate up to a maximum of 3 choices of schools which have given them either Confirmed Offer or placed them on Waiting List in the School Preference Form.
Amendments or cancellations will not be allowed after the closure of the Exercise School Preference Stage on 3 November 2017, 3pm.
d) Results Release Stage, Nov 2017
DSA-Sec results will be released through Primary Schools together with PSLE results in November. Successful applicants will not be allowed to make any school selection in the centralised S1 Posting Exercise. Candidates not studying in MOE schools will have to collect their DSA allocation results from MOE HQ Customer Service Centre.
Unsuccessful candidates will be issued with a S1 Option Form, and they must complete their S1 Option Form and submit it to their primary school.

1. What type of students are you looking for?
We are looking for students who have relevant experience in Music, Drama or Dance (e.g. performed at school concert, Singapore Youth Festival, etc) and display a strong interest and aptitude for the Performing Arts. He/She must also possess diligence and a positive attitude in academic work.
2. Is there a minimum requirement?
Formal certification in Music, Drama or Dance will be an advantage. All students who can fulfil the criteria listed in the section on Admission Criteria will be eligible.
3. When can the school start inviting students for interviews/selection and when will they know the outcome?
Application will be opened from 8 May to 7 Jul 2017. All application forms and relevant documents must be submitted to the school by 7 Jul 2017, 5pm.

5. How will you select students?
A panel comprising the Vice–Principal, HOD/SH CCA, HOD/SH Aesthetics and/or Teacher in-charge of Niche-Related CCAs will make the selection. Shortlisted applicants will undergo an audition as well.
6. When is the closing date for submitting the DSA application form?
All DSA applications should be submitted to our school by 7 Jul 2017, 5pm.

8. What sets Deyi Secondary School apart from other schools offering Performing Arts?
Our Performing Arts programme is composed of three key elements:
General Arts Programme comprises Art, Music, Dance and Drama that are conducted within curriculum time for all students. The programmes are built on a 4 stage Learning Framework:
• Exposure – engaging interest
• Experience – learning and performing
• Experimentation & Synthesis – improvising and creating new form
• Evaluation – heightening appreciation through analysis and critique
The Talent Development Programme provides opportunities for selected students to offer electives that may culminate in certification from reputable institutions.
The Arts Outreach Programme offers opportunities for interested students to be engaged in arts enrichment programmes, exchange programmes and performances for the community within and outside of school.
In addition, Performing Arts themes will be weaved into curriculum and instruction. 9. Beyond the Performing Arts, what else does Deyi Secondary offer for my child?
In line with the school's vision, Deyians must be equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge and attitudes to face the challenges of the world, be 'agile' in their response to changes and have the courage to explore new frontiers. Underlying all these is the courage to make a difference to the community.
Our comprehensive range of core and enrichment programmes which include the Character Development Programme, IT Enrichment Programme, Science Enrichment Programme and various others will expose students to experiences that provide them with opportunities to learn new skills, develop resilience and form a social conscience.
10. How heavily involved will my child be in this CCA and what academic assistance will you provide my child?
Training and practices for the Performing Arts related CCAs are held 2 times a week. The school has an academic monitoring system in place to identify students that require remediation and academic guidance.
11. Will there be additional fees?
There will not be any additional fees beyond our current standard practice:
The school will provide for the basic requirements (e.g. musical instruments, costumes, etc).
Additional items such as special training courses, overseas cultural exchanges, etc will be heavily subsidized by the school, but students will be expected to bear a certain percentage of the costs. The students' Edusave funds can usually be tapped for this purpose.
The school will ensure that no one is denied any opportunity due to financial difficulties. We will endeavor to work out a suitable arrangement to ensure that anyone who qualifies on merit for any opportunity is able to take it up.
12. If my child does not progress up to expectation, what will the school do?
The school will assess the situation and discuss the matter with you (parents/guardian) to ensure that your child progresses at a pace he/she is comfortable with.
General FAQs on DSA - Sec Exercise
1. What is DSA - Sec Exercise?
The DSA-Sec Exercise was first introduced in 2004 as part of MOE's move towards a more flexible and broad-based education system. Under the DSA-Sec Exercise, schools will be able to select a percentage of their students for admission outside of the centralised posting system, via their own selection criteria. These criteria can include diverse academic and non-academic achievements and talents.
2. How much flexibility is given to schools to select their students?
In general, schools can decide on their admission criteria, so long as they are meritocratic and transparent.
3. How will the students be admitted into the participating schools?
Students who meet the school-based admission criteria will be made a Confirmed Offer or placed on the Waiting List by the school by 31 Aug 2017. Students given a Confirmed Offer are guaranteed a place in the school, in a course [Express, Normal (Academic) or Normal (Technical)] which the student is eligible for. This is based on the PSLE aggregate of the student.
Students placed on the Waiting List are not guaranteed a place and their admission will be based on available vacancies.
Students on the Rejected List are deemed rejected by the school. However, they may still opt for the school during the S1 Posting Exercise.
4. Can a student receive more than 1 confirmed offer?
Yes. MOE will consolidate all the offers the student has received from the various schools in the School Preference Form which will be sent to the student. Candidates who have been identified under the Confirmed List and the Waiting List of a school will be asked to indicate their preference for up to a maximum of 3 schools. This will be done at their Primary schools. Amendments or cancellations will not be allowed after the closure of the Exercise School Preference Stage.
5. When will the student know the outcome of his choice?
Candidates currently studying in our MOE schools will be informed of their DSA allocation results together with the release of PSLE results through their primary schools. Other candidates (currently not studying in our MOE schools) will have to collect their DSA allocation results from MOE HQ Customer Service Centre, located in 1 North Buona Vista Drive, Podium Block MOE Building, S(138675).
Successful DSA Candidates will be issued with a Direct Admission Slip, informing them of the school that had accepted them. These students will not be allowed to make any school selection in the centralized S1 Posting Exercise. Unsuccessful DSA Candidates will also be issued with a S1 Option Form, informing them that their DSA application had been unsuccessful. These students must complete their S1 Option Form and submit it to their primary school.
6. Will there be enough places for students who wish to enrol in the school via the Sec 1 Posting Exercise?
As there is a cap of 5% for Deyi Secondary's enrolment under DSA-Sec exercise there will still be 95% of places available for enrollment under the Sec 1 Posting Exercise.
